Who Is BTS? A Beginner’s Guide to the K-Pop Group
BTS (방탄소년단, Bangtan Sonyeondan) is a seven-member boy group that debuted on June 13, 2013. They are signed to BIGHIT MUSIC, a label under HYBE, and the lineup consists of RM, Jin, SUGA, j-hope, Jimin, V, and Jung Kook. The team name “Bangtan Sonyeondan” literally means “bulletproof boy scouts” — it carries the ambition to block out the prejudice and oppression that teenagers and young adults face as they go through life. In 2017, an additional English meaning was added to the name: “Beyond The Scene” — youth who never settle for the status quo and keep growing toward their dreams.
This article is a beginner’s guide to BTS, tracing their journey in chronological order from their 2013 debut to the present in 2026. The reference date for this article is September 25, 2026.
2013: A Debut From a Small Company
BTS debuted under Big Hit Entertainment — a small-to-mid-size agency, the predecessor of today’s BIGHIT MUSIC — rather than one of the major entertainment companies. At the time, few would have predicted that a group from such a background would become a global act. Their debut single album, 2 Cool 4 Skool, released on June 13, 2013, led with the title track 〈No More Dream〉 — a hard-hitting hip-hop song that asks teenagers point-blank, “What is your dream?” From the very start, BTS made their direction clear: hip-hop roots with lyrics that speak to the concerns of the youth of their generation.
The following year, 2014, they released their first full-length album, DARK & WILD, and held their first solo concert that same year. The fan club name “ARMY” was chosen through an official fan café vote on July 9, 2013, and the fan club was formally established at a founding ceremony on March 29, 2014. (For more on ARMY, see the fourth article in this series, “What Does ARMY Mean? BTS Fandom Explained.”)
2015–2016: Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa and WINGS — Reaching the Top in Korea
The series that made BTS a household name began in 2015: Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa (花樣年華, “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life”). The mini album Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa pt.1 (April 2015) and its title track 〈I NEED U〉 — a song about the anxiety and love of youth — earned BTS their first music show win after debut. That was followed by 〈RUN〉 from Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa pt.2 (November 2015) and 〈불타오르네 (FIRE)〉 from the 2016 special album Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa Young Forever. Completed as a three-part youth trilogy, the Hwa Yang Yeon Hwa series elevated BTS to the top tier of Korean acts.
In October 2016, they released their second full album, WINGS. Its title track, 〈피 땀 눈물 (Blood Sweat & Tears)〉, explored temptation and coming-of-age through a dreamy sound and spectacular performance, and was praised for broadening the scope of BTS’s musical universe. WINGS shattered domestic album sales records at the time, and BTS began collecting grand prizes at year-end award ceremonies that year. From this period on, their music videos and choreography started gaining word-of-mouth attention among overseas fans too.
2017–2018: LOVE YOURSELF and Opening the Door to Billboard
Released in February 2017, YOU NEVER WALK ALONE led with 〈봄날 (Spring Day)〉 — a song of longing and comfort that is still counted among BTS’s signature songs. Then in September 2017, the first album of the LOVE YOURSELF series, LOVE YOURSELF 承 ‘Her’, arrived with its title track 〈DNA〉. 〈DNA〉 entered the Billboard Hot 100, the main U.S. singles chart, establishing BTS as a full-fledged player in the American mainstream music market.
2017 was also the year BTS became known as a “record-breaking group.” They won their first Top Social Artist award at the Billboard Music Awards and performed on the American Music Awards stage. All of these achievements were powered by ARMY’s organized voting and streaming.
In May 2018, their third full album, LOVE YOURSELF 轉 ‘Tear’, topped the Billboard 200, the main U.S. albums chart — a first for a Korean act. The title track 〈FAKE LOVE〉 also entered the Hot 100’s top 10. That September, leader RM delivered his “Speak Yourself” speech at the UNICEF “Generation Unlimited” event during the United Nations General Assembly, urging young people around the world to love themselves. The LOVE YOURSELF world tour, which began in 2018, scaled up to stadium venues, cementing BTS as a genuine global touring act.
2019–2021: At the Top of Global Pop Music
The April 2019 release MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA and its title track 〈Boy With Luv / 작은 것들을 위한 시 (Boy With Luv) (Feat. Halsey)〉 — a collaboration with American pop star Halsey — made headlines, and BTS became regular guests on American talk shows and award ceremonies. Their stadium tour that same year sold out major cities around the world.
2020 was a year when live performances ground to a halt worldwide due to COVID-19, but for BTS it became a year of winning purely through music. After releasing their fourth full album, MAP OF THE SOUL : 7, in February, they put out their first English-language single, 〈Dynamite〉, in August. The bright, disco-pop song 〈Dynamite〉 hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — a first for a Korean act — and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The title track of that year’s album BE, 〈Life Goes On〉, also reached No. 1 on the Hot 100, offering comfort in the pandemic era.
〈Butter〉, released in May 2021, spent a total of 10 weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100, proving BTS’s global pop appeal once again. 〈Permission to Dance〉 followed it to the top spot. The IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) named BTS its Global Recording Artist of the Year. During this period, BTS also attended the UN General Assembly’s SDG Moment event as “Special Presidential Envoy for Future Generations and Culture,” delivering a speech and a performance.
2022–2025: Solo Activities and Military Service
After releasing the anthology album Proof in June 2022, BTS announced a pause on group activities to focus on individual solo projects. Each member then released solo albums in their own colors: j-hope’s Jack In The Box (2022, headlining the U.S. Lollapalooza festival), RM’s Indigo (2022), SUGA (as Agust D)’s D-DAY (2023, solo world tour), Jimin’s FACE (2023), Jung Kook’s solo single 〈Seven (feat. Latto)〉 (2023, Hot 100 No. 1) and GOLDEN (2023), V’s Layover (2023), Jin’s HAPPY (2024), RM’s Right Place, Wrong Person (2024), Jimin’s MUSE (2024), and Jin’s Echo (2025). (Each member’s solo work is covered in detail in the second article of this series.)
Their mandatory military service also took place during this period. Jin enlisted first in December 2022, followed by j-hope (April 2023), SUGA (September 2023, as a social service agent), and RM, V, Jimin, and Jung Kook (December 2023). They were discharged in this order: Jin (June 12, 2024), j-hope (October 17, 2024), RM and V (June 10, 2025), Jimin and Jung Kook (June 11, 2025), and SUGA (June 21, 2025, released from service).
2026: The Full Group Returns
With all members having completed their military service, BTS returned as a full group with their fifth full album, ARIRANG, released on March 20, 2026. Led by the title track 〈SWIM〉, the album — the group’s first since the military hiatus — drew enormous attention. A world tour began in April 2026 and is set to run through March 2027; by early September 2026, they had completed their Los Angeles show at SoFi Stadium, keeping the tour’s momentum going. Why BTS Is Loved
BTS’s music has carried one consistent theme from debut to today: “the story of youth.” Questions about dreams (〈No More Dream〉), the anxieties of youth (〈I NEED U〉), self-love (〈DNA〉, 〈FAKE LOVE〉), and gratitude toward fans (〈작은 것들을 위한 시〉) — the lyrics stay close to fans’ own lives. Another hallmark is that the members participate directly in songwriting and composition — music built on their “own narrative.” Centered on RM, SUGA, and j-hope, the members have been deeply involved in the album-making process.
The other defining trait is their relationship with ARMY. Since their debut days, BTS has stayed close to fans through social media and self-produced content — variety shows, vlogs, and live broadcasts — and ARMY has responded with music streaming, voting, and charity work. It’s a case often cited as an example of music and fandom growing together.
